Here's what last year's winners said about how a Dezeen Award has transformed their studio:

The Melbourne-based architect and director of the studio that won emerging architecture studio of the year at Dezeen Awards 2019.

"The press received through the awards program had a big impact also," Roberts added.

The Dezeen Awards studio categories have been specifically created to highlight the architects and designers producing the most outstanding work. There are six studio categories, two in each sector for both emerging and established studios.

"Absolutely fantastic for the team"

During a live conversation as part of Dezeen's Virtual Design Festival last week, London based interior designer Sevil Peach said that winning interior designer of the year 2019 at Dezeen Awards was "absolutely fantastic for the team."

"I think it's a validation of one's efforts, maybe talent, and it's a reward of the team's hard work," says Peach. "Our clients like the idea of us winning an award because it becomes a validation for them as well."

"A lovely, unexpected surprise"

"Winning the Dezeen Award gave us an incredible amount of international exposure opening us up to so many new opportunities – projects with amazing sites, briefs and clients," said Alex Mok, co-founder of architecture and interior design studio Linehouse.

"It has also been an important validation for our past and current clients that the projects we completed together were indeed unique," she added.

Linehouse was named emerging interior design studio of the year and Alex Mok remains involved in the programme as she takes on the role of judging the interiors categories alongside 75 other industry professionals.

"Winning constitutes a benchmark for our studio’s growth and transformation over the years"

Amsterdam-based Studio Drift was named design studio of the year and also won in the lighting design of the year category with their project Franchise Freedom.

"We were incredibly surprised and honoured to win the design studio of the year award," said co-founder Lonneke Gordijn.

"It makes us feel fulfilled that so many people value our work, and it motivates us to keep creating."

"This award has actually led to an increase in enquiries"

Tokyo-based design studio Takt Project won the emerging design studio of the year award at Dezeen Awards 2019.

Founder Satoshi Yoshiizumi explained that winning the studio award has led to increased "opportunities to work with international clients" and has prompted the studio to "refurbish their website."

"Winning a Dezeen Award was one of our greatest wishes," explained Yoshiizumi. "I am sure that winning was a turning point for us."

Shipping containers turned into micro apartments by Containerwerk

Building startup Containerwerk has turned old shipping containers into 21 micro apartments for visitors to the town of Wertheim in Germany.

Called My Home, each apartment sits in a decommissioned shipping container. The containers have been arranged in groups of three and clad in timber.

My Home by Containerwerk

Each apartment has 26 square metres of interior space, fitted with a kitchenette and a dining table along with a bed and television. A separate bathroom with a shower is built in to each container at the opposite end to the bed.

Full-height glazing at either end brings light into the open-plan micro apartments. The rooms are decorated with white walls, wooden furniture and grey upholstery.

My Home by Containerwerk

The short stay housing development is aimed at business travellers and tourists looking for an alternative to a hotel stay.

Untreated local timber was selected for the cladding to create an "aesthetic overlap" with the surrounding trees and the "trendy" containers, said developer Nicolas de Fejer.

My Home by Containerwerk

De Fejer, together with business partners Felix von Knobelsdorff and Clemens Müller, collaborated with Containerwerk to create a sustainability-led alternative to hotel accommodation.

"We all travel a lot on business and are fed up with the dark, stuffy corridors and restrictive rooms typical of many hotels,” said Müller, a structural engineer by training.

My Home by Containerwerk

"The whole project is sustainable," added Von Knobelsdorff. "Even the first step sees valuable resources being conserved due to decommissioned and scrapped freight containers being used."

Strip foundations mean the micro apartments could easily be taken apart and the land returned to its former state.

My Home by Containerwerk

Each container was converted in Containerwerk's dedicated facility and transported to the site on a truck.

These prefabricated elements were then laid on foundations, joined together and covered in cladding and a roof.

Containerwerk was founded in 2017 and specialises in converting decommissioned shipping containers into liveable spaces.

To showcase the potential of container architecture at Milan Design Week in 2018, Containerwerk created a pair of show homes.

In the USA, MB Architecture used stacked shipping containers to create a holiday home on Long Island, and Allford Hall Monaghan Morris created a housing development from them on a former car park in Oklahoma.

Vello Bike by Valentin Vodev for Vello

Vello Bike for VDF products fair

VDF products fair: Vello Bike is an ultra-light bicycle developed by Valentin Vodev, which can be folded into a portable size in seconds.

Vello Bike was developed by Austrian product designer Vodev for his bike brand Vello, which specialises in bicycles suited to the needs of city dwellers.

Its key features include 50-centimetre-wide wheels and a folding mechanism that is hinge-free, and instead reliant on a magnetic connection that doubles as the bicycle's suspension.

This design ensures that the bike is lightweight and that it can be easily folded into a "small portable companion" within five seconds.

"The bicycle combines innovative technologies and a unique design to offer solutions to known urban challenges, for example, problems switching between bike riding, car and public transportation, and theft protection," explained Vello.

"In just a couple of seconds, it can be carried into public transportation, loaded in the car, or taken on an airplane, and folded for storage in the apartment and office."
