In photographing the American west, Andong Zheng uncovers hidden traces of Chinese history

The New York-based photographer, originally from China, found that Chinese labour was historically excluded in the archives and photographs of the First Transcontinental Railroad in the mid-19th century. He sets out to the American west to find the origins of the “unassimilable others” narrative that culminated in the Chinese Exclusion Act in 1882.
