Copenhagen-based research lab Space10 is to open a research and design lab next week, in the Dhan Mill gated compound in south Delhi that is home to emerging design studios, creatives and entrepreneurs.

The new lab will host community talks and exhibitions, workshops and offer rapid prototyping facilities for local and international designers. It opens on 22 November and will run until 15 April 2020.

Space10 Delhi hopes to attract designers, technologists, artists, architects, academics, entrepreneurs and activists to come together and explore how design and technology can solve problems.

"The goal is to create a collaborative platform where experts, creatives and specialists in multiple fields can meet, experiment, and prototype solutions, that can enable a better everyday life for people and planet," explained Space10 communications director Simon Caspersen.

The IKEA-backed lab has previously created short-term pop ups in cities including Shanghai, London and Nairobi, but the site in India is its first semi-permanent outpost outside Copenhagen.

"We want to be where the future is," explained managing director of Space10, Kaave Pour. "India has a young, educated and tech-savvy population and will soon be the most populated country on Earth with a fifth of the world's youth living there."

"India is also one of the most diverse countries on the planet with the fastest growing economy," he continued.

"We therefore consider India extremely inspiring and the ideal place to learn and explore new sustainable and scalable solutions that can help combat real problems for real people."

The programme will explore a broad spectrum of design solutions from digital fabrication and open-source design, to augmented reality and clean-energy solutions, a particular problem in the smog-filled capital.

Space10 Delhi will also host residencies and collaborate with local partners, as well as inviting international collaborators to work with the lab.

Initially the lab will partner with Mumbai architecture and design studio The Busride, Mumbai hackerspace Maker's Asylum, Delhi studio St+art, local radio station boxout.fm and Unbox Festival which takes place in Bangalore in February 2020.

Chef and sustainability campaigner Radhika Khandelwal of zero-waste Delhi restaurant Fig & Maple will also be amongst the collaborators, with others yet to be announced.

Due to the air pollution in the Indian capital at the moment, Space10 Delhi decided to change the opening weekend programme to include only Delhi-based media and speakers.

The two day launch event on the lab's opening weekend will mark the four-year anniversary of Space10, which has worked on projects including The Urban Village project – a proposal for a subscription-based multi-generational living platform – and explored the future of food with mealworm burgers.

Like the Copenhagen flagship, the intention is to bring a wide variety of thinkers and makers together to tackle "real problems for real people" with scalable solution.

"Innovation doesn't happen in isolation so we want to anchor our research and design process closer to people," said Pour.

"We want to invite people in, gain new knowledge and perspectives, and engage forward-thinking partners in exploring, designing and testing sustainable solutions that enable more people to live a better everyday life, wherever they are," he continued.

"We hope Space10 Delhi ignite ideas, perspectives and solutions that wouldn't have been possible anywhere else."
