Kunst sofa by Inoda + Sveje for Karimoku

Dezeen Showroom: design duo Inoda + Sveje has designed a sculptural sofa from solid wood for Japanese furniture manufacturer Karimoku, which is named Kunst after the Danish word for art.

Kyoko Inoda and Nils Sveje designed the three-seater to be not just ergonomic and comfortable but also to be striking when viewed on its own in a room.

Made from solid oak, walnut and wenge wood, the sofa comes with fabric or leather upholstery and is distinguished by smooth, seemingly unbroken contours.

Developed in collaboration with Karimoku's manufacturers and their 70 years of woodworking experience, the Kunst sofa demands "extremely high techniques and skill to create," the company said.

The result is a seating design, in which the wood and upholstery blend together seamlessly.

"The aim was to create a timeless masterpiece, realising the highest sense of aesthetics, breathing life into the smallest details — creating that, which could be loved for many years not because it particularly stood out but because it was simply beautiful," Karimoku said.
