Studio Gang transforms Wisconsin power plant into Beloit College student union

Beloit Powerhouse by Studio Gang

US firm Studio Gang has completed its transformation of a coal-burning power plant into the wellness-focused student union for Beloit College in Wisconsin with a suspended running track looping through the building.

The 100-year-old plant building, which is located between the campus of the arts college and Rock River in Beloit, was updated to include a fitness centre and a gymnasium with a three-lane track and an eight-lane swimming pool.

Studio Gang added a pedestrian bridge and a polycarbonate field house to the building

Originally called Blackhawk Generating Station, the plant was first built in 1913 by Wisconsin Power and Light. It was expanded in 1927 and again in the mid-1940s before being decommissioned in 2010.

Studio Gang's project for Beloit College, called Powerhouse, retained and updated the original red brick, yellow brick and concrete structures, and added a new 17,000-square-foot (1,579-square-metre) volume made from translucent polycarbonate walls and steel framing.

Large windows are slotted between the translucent panels

As such, Powerhouse is segmented into three volumes that form the arrangement of three key facilities: the swimming pool, the track and the field house.

The translucent structure on the northern side contains a field house. The panels are arranged at angles to one another to create slender long gaps for windows in between. At night, when artificial lights are turned on, the entire structure glows up.

The suspended running track loops through the building

In the middle, a larger brickwork volume hosts a suspended, three-lane running track that loops around the first floor of the building partially extending into the field house and the swimming pool on either side.

In addition to the sports facilities, Powerhouse includes a number of recreational spaces for students, like a coffee shop, lounges, a conference centre, a lecture hall and a theatre.

Existing brickwork runs throughout

Studio Gang also added a new pedestrian bridge that punctures the brickwork structure to connect Powerhouse to the existing campus, and created a link from the college and the town to the Rock River.

Inside, the firm chose a stripped-back industrial palette that pays homage to the history of the building – including existing weathered brickwork and steel structures.

The running track also extends into the field house

Another key element of the project is that, rather than using air for heating and cooling, it uses water-supplied radiant panels.

"Buildings usually use air for heating and cooling; however, water, which is much denser, is actually more efficient," said Studio Gang.

"Radiant panels integrated into the building's surfaces are able to use energy from the river water for most of the Powerhouse's heating and cooling needs, improving comfort within the building and maintaining the highest quality of air, while also significantly minimising total energy use."

Other power plants that have been adaptively reused include the former Philips power plant in Eindhoven, which has been transformed into an innovation hub by young architect Janne van Berlo.

London's decommissioned Battersea Power Station is also undergoing redevelopment and will become the centrepiece of a 17-hectare Thames-side masterplan by Rafael Viñoly.

The project is set to include a public square designed by BIG, and housing designed by Ian Simpson Architects, dRMM, Gehry Partners and Foster + Partners.

Chila Kumari Singh Burman overwrites Tate Britain's neoclassical facade with neon Diwali installation

Remembering A Brave New World by Chila Kumari Sigh Burman for Tate Britain

Bollywood posters and fluorescent effigies of Hindu deities have been superimposed on Tate Britain's portico, as part of an installation designed by artist Chila Kumari Singh Burman for the museum's fourth annual winter commission.

Entitled Remembering A Brave New World, the design was unveiled to coincide with Diwali, the five-day Indian festival which celebrates the triumph of light over darkness.

In this spirit, Burman clad the museum's facade in a menagerie of multi-coloured neon lights, which penetrate the darkness of London's shortening days, overshadowing the building's traditional, neoclassical architecture and its historical connotations.

The installation encompasses the portico and pediment of the Tate Britain

"It's important to critique buildings like this because they're very Eurocentric," Burman told Dezeen.

"So, I just thought: why not do something that captures the moment what we're all going through right now? I felt like it needed a blast of joy and light. And Diwali is about good over evil, about hope, unity and the light at the end of the tunnel."

Burman, who describes herself as a Punjabi Liverpudlian, drew on a bricolage of cultural influences to create the installation, which merges Indian mythology with pop cultural references, inspirational slogans and cherished childhood memories.

The luminous silhouette of an ice cream van, for example, which stands on the landing of Tate Britain's grand staircase, is a nod to the fact that her father purchased one after moving to England and struggling to find work as a tailor.

Featured next to positive exclamations like joy, love, light and truth, is spiritual imagery such as the third eye, the Om symbol and various deities such as the elephant-headed god Ganesha.

In a characteristic fusion of Burman's feminism with her Indian heritage, the artist also included an image of Lakshmi Bai, the queen or rani who once ruled the princely state of Jhansi.

Today considered an icon of freedom, she died on the battlefield while fighting off the British in the Indian Rebellion of 1857, surrounded by an army she had trained herself.

The installation's title, Remembering A Brave New World, is emblazoned in purple on the front of the building

Perched atop the building's pediment, the iconic statue of Britannia is overlaid with an image of Kali, the Hindu goddess of destruction but also a saviour and protector who has come to be viewed as a feminist icon.

Emblazoned above, in playful subversion, are the words "I'm a mess".

"Most of us, because we're working from home, are waking up feeling a bit of a mess," said Burman. "So Britannia is a mess because I'm a mess. And everybody says: that's really good Chila because, in a way, Britain is in a mess."

To create a technicolour spectacle even during the daytime, the Corinthian columns are wrapped in fairy lights and larger-than-life versions of Burman's artworks, including the collage Punjabi Rockers, while doors are pasted over with posters of Bollywood stars.

"Originally it was going to be all girls but we didn't have enough images of girls that were high resolution, so I thought we'll add some men in it," the artist explained.

"I didn't want men on it, I don't know why. Some of the men look like idiots."

The installation will be on display until the end of January, with London mayor Sadiq Khan saying he hopes it will cheer up the capital's residents during the coronavirus lockdown and beyond.

"Chila's colourful tribute to her Punjabi and English heritage is a great way to mark Diwali's celebration of light over darkness and will be a symbol of hope during these difficult times," he said.

The columns are wrapped in blown-up versions of Burman's previous artworks

Tate Britain's previous winter commissions have seen Anne Hardy transform the building's facade into a ghostly ruin while Monster Chetwynd propped a giant, glowing slug on its balustrade.

The Tate came under fire this summer for a failure to tackle institutional racism in its galleries, with a mural depicting child slavery and Chinese caricatures on display in its Rex Whistler restaurant while pandemic-related job cuts reportedly affected black, Asian and minority ethnic workers disproportionally.

Under mounting public pressure, the museum recently cut its ties with its longtime patron, art dealer Anthony d'Offay, who previously took pictures of himself posing with a racist golliwog doll.

Rado to launch four new watches in virtual design week on Dezeen

Rado Design Week

Dezeen has teamed up with Rado to present Rado Design Week, a week of virtual content exploring the design of the Swiss watch brand's four unique new timepieces.

Rado Design Week will be hosted on Dezeen from 30 November to 4 December, showcasing watch designs by four renowned studios: Italian duo Formafantasma, British designer Tej Chauhan, Japanese studio YOY and Indian duo Thukral & Tagra.

Each of these designers has created an addition to Rado's True Square Collection, a range of watches characterised by square faces. This collection is one of Rado's most iconic, with a shape that's rooted in the brand's history.

"Cutting-edge and futuristic designs"

These new Rado watches draw on the brand's history as a pioneer of high-tech materials and innovative technologies, but also look to the future.

The designers have worked with contemporary shapes, finishes and displays to create watches with a distinctly modern feel.

"You can expect cutting-edge, out-of-the-box and futuristic designs that make each of these timepieces unique, beautiful and functional," said Rado.

For the first four days of Rado Design Week, Dezeen will present videos revealing the design concept behind each watch.

Dezeen editor-in-chief Marcus Fairs will also conduct live interviews with Rado CEO Adrian Bosshard and each of the designers, which will be broadcast live on Dezeen throughout the week.

The week will conclude with an exclusive competition, offering Dezeen readers a chance to win a Rado watch of their choice from the collection.

Rado's first virtual design week takes place from 30 November to 4 December

Rado Design Week marks a pivotal moment for Rado, which started out in a workshop in Lengnau back in 1917. Although the brand often hosts events to launch its new watches, this will be its first virtual design week.

It follows in the footsteps of Dezeen's Virtual Design Festival, the world's first online design festival. With a rolling programme of online talks, lectures, movies and product launches, it explored new ways of bringing design to a global audience, at a time when it was impossible to attend physical design events, due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Rado Design Week takes place from 30 November to 4 December at www.dezeen.com/rado-design-week.

Here is the schedule:

Monday 30 November
10:00am – video about the Rado True Square Digital watch by YOY
